In many of these events, the Blue crews will either start in contact or within view of each other. So there may be a few interesting intra event competitions.
In addition to the Blue collegiate crews there will be at least three other notable entries.
Bob Blase, USNA LW ’75 reports: I’m rowing next weekend in the Grand Masters’ Singles, Event #1 at the HOCR although I’m not really race ready [Bow #47] and in the Directors’ Challenge Mixed Doubles event [following event #30 at 1645 on Saturday] with one of my sculling coaches and friend Katie Weeden, just for fun.
Tom Cook, USNA LW ’76 —
I’m still going strong with rowing out on the “Left Coast”. I will be rowing at the HOCR on Saturday 22 Oct around 10:19 for the San Diego Rowing Club in the Senior-Master Doubles Men ( Event 9, Bow #23). We will be rowing against the other 60+ boats within that 50+ event. Tom also wants to know how Dave Vogel got such a “young” partner. Yale’s 2x has an average age of 55.
Dave Vogel, Yale ’71 —
My partner [at Head of the Housatonic] was John Morrell Yale ’86, Yale faculty member in Engineering and a good training inspiration. We took a bronze at the Masters Nationals in OK this summer, but seem to have started to finally get the old man in shape of late. We will race the Head of the Charles in the 50+ 2x. [Event #9, Bow #24].
Not only will Tom and Dave be facing off in the same event, their starting positions will put them in close contact for direct competition. Tom and his partner, with an average age of 60, also will be competing in the same event with 11 other crews for a Grand Master medal.

Truth be Told? Head Of The Charles Rumor Mill. Roughly 5% of this is fact. 5 – 10% resembles fact. We can’t speak to the accuracy of the rest.
See articles below from Yale Sports on Bulldog LWs, HWs and Women. Nothing as yet from the folks in Annapolis.
Following the last Blue Blog, Tom Weil, Yale LW ’70, responded with some omitted critical detail on Dave Vogel’s partner in the HOH and HOCR:
Dave doesn’t mention that Morrell is not only an ex-lightweight who rowed for Dave, but also the inventor of the “”brown shoe” (i.e. airborne) scull. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BXxL9gztO8 ([Yale LW Coach Andy] Card is the first sculler, Morrell is the second) He was also involved with the development of the Segway HT.
This is very interesting stuff … check it out on YouTube, above, and also on Professor Morrell’s Yale web page:

Too bad that the “sliding rigger” as well as the “foils” are not allowed in competition.
We also received this interesting response to an earlier Blue Blog from Darrow Kirkpatrick, USNA LW ’57, and a “plank owner” member of Navy’s first lightweight crew team.
I always enjoy your reports and commentary–particularly this one with the articles on Harry Parker. It jogged my memory a bit back to 1955, Navy’s first season of scheduled LW rowing. In returning to the “thrilling days of yesteryear” I found some trivia that you might enjoy, if you don’t already know. The press articles containing “boatings” showed that Harry rowed no. 2 in the Penn crew that stopped Navy’s run of wins at 31 (the longest run in 103 years of rowing history according to the press) in the Adams Cup on the Charles on 7 May 1955. According to the articles included in your email, Penn went on that year to win The Grand Challenge Cup at Henley. It was not a good day for Navy HWs, but a terrific day for Navy LWs. As the Boston Herald recorded, “Navy salvaged the varsity lightweight victory…” It was our second outing in the first scheduled season for LW crew, the initial outing being the week before when we lost the first Callow Cup to Penn by a deck length, and we were elated. Following us across the finish line one length behind in a very tight race for second were MIT, Harvard and Dartmouth in that order. This race along with the day we lost to Princeton in Philadelphia by inches in 1957, so close the Princeton coach had already congratulated Hub Davidson [USNA ’45 – Navy LW coach] on our win when the judges finally gave their decision, were probably our finest races in my three years. Glorious times long bygone, but so fondly remembered.
Well Rowed and Bravo Zulu to the Navy First LWs …
Go Blue … Be One With The Boat!
Cheers!
