Reflections on Shells from Coach Jon Eric VanAmringe, Yale 1970
When I rowed at Yale, all Yale lightweight crews used standard heavyweight Pocock shells – with one exception.

For the 1970 spring season the Y150 had a “lightweight” Pocock. Hull was standard with less draft; gunwales were standard but had grooves inside to reduce weight; bow splash guard had “windows” covered with film. In 1970 when we went to Henley Royal Regatta rowing for the “Thames Cup,” our coach opted to ship the shell with hopes of selling her in the UK as a USA special. There were no buyers, and the shell flew back on a Pan Am 747.

When I coached N150, Coach Carl Ullrich (Cornell 1950) had purchased a lightweight Pocock generally known as a “Cedar Speeder.” As before, the hull was standard but cut down to reflect lesser draft, and the gunwales were thinner and cedar rather than the standard stiffer poplar. The result was a slightly lighter boat that had lost a significant amount of stiffness. If you had the boat in slings and wiggled the bow, the whole boat swayed and the stern “wagged.” The boat also experienced some twist as well as the aforementioned yaw. Whatever stiffness she had when built rapidly deteriorated with use and age. Nonetheless, she was a very handsome shell, particularly when the hull was cleaned with a liberal coating of lemon oil.

At the time, we made an attempt to weigh the boats in Hubbard Hall – most exceeded 300lbs rigged and without the additional eight heavy wooden 12’6″ oars. The Battalion boats were heaviest as the hull had some glass reinforcement.

Wooden shells … iron men!
