5/3/2008 – Collegiate Rowing Polls and This Weekend’s Racing

Folks…

While the Navy LWs and Yale HWs will train on their home courses, all other squads will find competition on the road this weekend with exciting racing, traditional rivalries and lots of classic silver at stake.

* On the Charles River in Cambridge #1 and undefeated Yale LW 1V will face #2 and once defeated {by Navy in the Joe Murtaugh Cup} #2 Princeton and #8 Harvard in competition for the oldest trophy in LW rowing — the Vincent Bowditch Goldthwait Cup {1918}. Yale last won in 2006, with Harvard winning four of the last five HYP contests. Princeton’s last 1V victory came in 1999. The Bulldog, Tiger and Crimson squads will also compete overall for the David H. Vogel Cup. Yale last won in 2006, with Harvard winning three of the last five Vogel Cups. Yale won the initial competition in 2003. Dave Vogel and Tom Weil will be at the race, so we will look forward to on-site insight.

* Navy Coach Rick Clothier {Washington ’66} will take the #12 Navy HW 1V back to the waters, where his rowing career began as a University of Washington Huskie Coxswain. On the MontLake Cut at the Windermere Cup Regatta, the Mids will face #1 Washington and Poland’s Under-23 National Team. Un-ranked Navy W will face #15 Washington and Melbourne University, the 2006 Australian National Champion and the 2007 runner-up. If you are inclined the racing will be broadcast live on the web at www.GoHuskies.com. The Navy W will race at 2:15 p.m. (EDT), while the Navy HW men will compete at 2:25 p.m. (EDT). The remainder of the Navy HW squad will face Columbia on Sunday on Mercer Lake in NJ. The Navy HW 1V lost to Columbia last weekend. Columbia claimed the Maxwell Stevenson Trophy for the first time since 1963.
* #1 ranked and un-defeated Yale 1V women will face #10 Brown on the Seekonk River in Providence in their last race before the EAWRC championships. Last year Brown won the team trophy at the NCAA championships.

And for those among you who love statistics and really need to know exactly where your favorite crew ranks among all, there is Row 2K’s cMax Ratings. The results rank teams, and more importantly, provide a relative estimate of how fast a team is. Description of methodology and the rankings are compiled below.

Check out the most recent cMax Ratings for LW Men. Princeton is ranked #1 with Yale 0.6 seconds back. Harvard ranks 8.3 seconds back of the Tigers. If the statisticians are correct, the HYP Goldthwait Cup race will be a photo finish between Tigers and Bulldogs with Crimson trailing by a length plus of open-water. Even though the racing is on the Charles with MIT hard on the Memorial Drive shore, victories, bragging rights and possession of the silver should be settled on the water! Navy LWs were ranked #3, 4.6 seconds back of Princeton and 4 seconds back of Yale.

Yale Faces Defending NCAA Champion Brown In Final Race Of Regular Season
Bulldogs’ Varsity Eight Reclaims Top Spot In CRCA/US Rowing Poll

Head Coach Will Porter and Assistant Coach Jamie Snider.

April 30, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT. – The road doesn’t get any easier for the Yale women’s crew. After defeating Virginia and Radcliffe last weekend in the varsity races, the Bulldogs meet defending NCAA champion Brown on Saturday morning. Racing starts at 6:30 a.m. on the Seekonk River.

“This weekend will be a big challenge for us,” said Yale head coach Will Porter. “Brown is the defending NCAA champion, but we are not looking to beat Brown. We are just looking to go fast. In fact, we hope Brown goes fast as well.”

The Yale varsity eight victory over third-ranked Virginia and No. 12 Radcliffe propelled the Bulldogs back into the top spot in the CRCA/US Rowing national poll. Yale was ranked first in the preseason poll but was overtaken by California after the opening weekend of racing. The Bulldogs received 13 of 22 first-place votes this week and have 431 points, four more than second-ranked Cal.

Saturday’s race with the Bears concludes the regular season. Yale competes in the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., on May 18, and should be in good position to receive a bid to the NCAA Team Championships beginning May 30 on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

“We have shown that we can be tough at home on our course but from now on we have to do it on the road,” Porter said. “We need to do a better job getting off the line in all our crews. I think we can go faster by continuing to work on the small things throughout the race course that make the difference. We are slowly closing in on our best stuff.”

Brown is coming off a sweep of Columbia and Cornell last weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bears’ varsity eight is ranked 10th.

Rowing Teams to Face Nationally-Ranked Washington

Navy Crew

May 1, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, MD. — The varsity crews from the Navy women’s and men’s heavyweight rowing teams will travel to Seattle, Wash., to take part in the annual Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta, Saturday on Montlake Cut. The annual day of racing coincides with the Opening Day of Boating Season for the region and will be viewed by nearly 100,000 spectators.

The Navy women’s team’s entry will race at 2:15 p.m. (EDT) against Washington and Melbourne University (Australia), while the Navy men will compete at 2:25 p.m. (EDT) against Washington and Poland’s National Team. Washington’s women’s boat placed 15th at the 2007 NCAA Championship, while the men’s crew won varsity race at last year’s Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship.

“We’re excited to be taking part in such a wonderful event,” said Navy women’s head coach Mike Hughes. “It is a great opportunity for us to be able to race against a team the caliber of Washington. We will definitely be tested, but we are looking forward to it.”

“Washington had a great crew last year and they have been the top-ranked boat each week this year,” said Navy heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier, a 1966 graduate of Washington. “They will be a great challenge for us.”

The remainder of the Navy heavyweight team will race against Columbia Sunday at Princeton, N.J., starting at 1 p.m.

Junior stroke Rachel Powers rows with the rest of her boat to win against Oregon State in the women’s varsity four race in the April 19 dual regatta.

The Husky men will face the Polish National Team, Melbourne University and the United States Naval Academy in this year’s Windermere Cup Regatta tomorrow morning.

The stage is set for a tremendous event this Saturday as the Washington men’s and women’s crew teams will compete against not only strong competition, but foreign competition as well.

The Washington men’s crew team will race No. 12 Navy and the Under-23 National Team from Poland, and the women will be competing against Navy and the University of Melbourne. The winner of Saturday’s races will be awarded the coveted Windermere Cup Trophy.

“It’s pretty cool having the Polish guys coming to race,” sophomore Simon Taylor said. “It’s good to have a national team because it will be really challenging for us, and that makes it exciting. I’m looking forward to racing down the cut, having the fans screaming at us the whole time.”

The Polish men’s team will travel to the UW with three crew team members who have placed fifth overall in the Under-23 World Championships in England.

For women’s crew, the University of Melbourne is the 2006 Australian National Champion and the 2007 runners-up. This will be their first visit to the Windermere Cup.

“I know that Melbourne will be really, really fast,” sophomore Kayleigh Mack said. “They are the fastest university in Australia. I don’t know that much about Navy, but I assume that they will be fast as well. We will need to duke it out and go for a really hard push.”

The Huskies have enjoyed great success in the previous Windermere Cup regattas. The men have taken home the Windermere Cup 15 of the last 17 seasons, including four of the last five years, and the women have won 12 of the last 16 Windermere regattas. This year’s race is expected to be quite competitive, especially in women’s crew.

“I think that it’s going to be a really close race between the three crews,” Mack said. “It will be really fun to watch because everyone will be going really hard. It will be a good race for the crowd to get involved in and yell and scream for the Huskies.”

Fans will have a lot to look forward to with this race, which will be broadcast live on 95.0 KJR and on the web at GoHuskies.com.

“They can look forward to a real energetic atmosphere,” Taylor said. “I’m sure that there will be a huge crowd showing up on the banks of the cut. It will be a wild and crazy atmosphere with the Husky band there too.”

Racing will begin at 10:20 a.m. with the men’s age 40 and older eight boat and will culminate with the featured races at 11:15 a.m. (women) and 11:25 a.m. (men). Spectators are encouraged to view the race from the shores of the Montlake Cut.

cMax Rankings
April 30, 2008

Results:
The results rank teams, and more importantly, provide a relative estimate of how fast a team is. The rankings are intended for entertainment purposes, and are not intended to replace official league and coaches polls.

The “Secs Back” figures predict how much each ranked team will be behind the #1 ranked boat in an average “standardized” race; approximately six minutes for men’s eights, seven minutes for women’s eights. So, if Team A is 12 “Secs Back”, then they are predicted to be 12 seconds behind the #1 team in a standardized race. To compare two teams, just look at the difference in their “Secs Back” numbers. If A is 12 seconds back and B is 16 seconds back, then the model predicts that, on average for the standardized races, A will beat B by 4 seconds.

You’ll see that there is much more information in the “Secs Back” than in the rankings. In some cases, closely ranked teams have very different “Secs Back” and are thus not likely to be very competitive… and in other cases, 10 teams are within 1 second of one another.

Methodology:
The model uses a well-known statistical technique called OLS (ordinary least squares). It is based on the premise that although individual race results may vary, if Team A is on average 2 seconds better than Team B, and if B is on average 2 seconds better than Team C, then, on average, Team A will beat Team C by 4 seconds.

In addition to head-to-head race times, the model considers 1) general race conditions (distance, current, wind, etc.), 2) date of the race (more recent races count more than races earlier in the season), and 3) whether the team was “pressed” in the race (was there another boat close by at the finish or did they win by open water?).

Heat results, which are given less weight than Finals results, are included in the analysis only to the extent that an outcome was “pivotal.” So, for instance, if the top three boats in a six-team race go to the Finals, and the bottom three go to the Petites, only the heat race times for the third and fourth place boats that battled to get into the Finals are included in the model. The model does not consider “home-court” or lane advantages, but does consider equipment failure to the extent that is reported at www.row2k.com .

Data:
The statistical model is based solely on 2007 season Varsity 8’s race results as reported at www.row2k.com , beginning with races in February and continuing through last weekend. Some effort is made to clean up the data, as there can be errors in the posted results. Teams are included in the final rankings only if they have raced at least twice against other teams that have raced at least twice.

cMax Ratings:
cMax collegiate crew ratings were developed by Chris Maxwell. Chris currently teaches Sports Economics and Game Theory at Boston College. He has a BA in Mathematics and Economics from Penn and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard.

Chris has been producing cMax collegiate crew ratings since 2002. He has fallen out of a single into the Charles many times and does not pretend to know much about rowing or sculling. Fortunately, others have helped in the development of the model — most notably, Tom Murray with rowing and Chris Cavanagh with statistics.
