10/13/2011 – Blue Crews Open Well … off to the HOTC

Folks …

Both Blue Crew squads [Navy and Yale] opened the Fall rowing season with good performances and a number of victories. Off-season rowing also offers the opportunity for fundamental coaching and a time to test different combinations in multiple events and to integrate the former “freesh” into the varsity squads.

Navy Rowing With Successful Results at Navy Day Regatta

The Navy rowing teams won seven races last weekend in its first action of the season at the Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia.
Navy won the men’s heavyweight collegiate 4 final, the men’s lightweight / heavyweight collegiate Frosh/novice 8+ final, the men’s heavyweight collegiate JV 8+ final, the men’s open/collegiate lightweight 8+ final, the men’s heavyweight collegiate Frosh/novice 4+ final, the men’s heavyweight open/collegiate 8+ final and the women’s open/collegiate 8+ final.

10/8/2011- Fall Racing Starts – 8 October; Blue Crews on US Squads

Folks …

After a long hiatus, it is high time to renew the Blue Blog. Perhaps it was the distraction of an additional dog, building a barn, or the funk overwhelming Red Sox Nation … lots of reasons — no excuses. The rowers are back in class and on the Severn and Housatonic … first Fall races for the Blue Crews will be this weekend:
Navy crews will travel to Philadelphia and the Schuylkill River for a 2.5 mile head race challenge in the Navy Day Regatta. Fittingly this event celebrates the 236th birthday of the US Navy [13 October 1775]. http://www.navydayregatta.com/
Yale crews will compete in the 17th Head of the Housatonic over a 2.7 mile course upstream of the Gilder Boat House on their home waters. http://www.headofthehousatonic.org/
Fall schedules for all Blue Crews – HW, LW and Women are included bottom below.

Yale LWs and Coach — EARC crew of the Year.

6/2/2011 – Off to the IRA

Folks …

The 109th IRA regatta will be held on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., starting the morning of Thursday, June 2 and concluding on Saturday, June 4. The Blue Crews, HW and LW, were selected and will be there with full squads.

Three weeks after a bronze-medal finish at the Eastern Sprints, the Yale lightweight varsity eight travels to Camden, N.J. Competing for the national title will be the top seven finishers from the Eastern Sprints as well as Mercyhurst, the top lightweight crew at the Dad Vail Regatta. At the Sprints, Yale led with 750 meters remaining in the race before being passed by Harvard and Dartmouth.

5/14/11 – off to the SPRiNTS

Folks …

For some crews it has been two weeks for others, three, to practice, improve and fine tune for the beginning of the championship season.  With six across on Lake Quinsigamond and in Cherry Hill, the dynamics are far different from the racing season to date.  In some cases the morning qualifying heats can be full out bow to bow for 2,000 meters [remember the Yale HW 1V failing by inches to make the Grand Finals in 2010], while other crew can strategically pace for lane placement saving for the afternoon Grand Finals.

Now the Polls translate to seedings and have significant meaning in setting heats and lanes for preliminary competition.

EARC LW Men:

Yale — 1V [4], 2V [4], 1F [1], 3V [1], 2F [No Entry], 4V/2F[2]
Navy — 1V [5], 2V [5], 1F [7], 3V [3], 2F [1T], 4V [1]
EARC HW Men:
Navy — 1V [8], 2V [4], 1F [5], 3V [6], 2F [1T]
Yale — 1V [9], 2V [9], 1F [12], 3V [3]
EAWRC Women:
Yale — 1V [4], 2V [3], 3V [3], V4+[3]

4/12/2011 – It’s a Sweep — 4 of 6 Blue Crews win it all last weekend

Folks …

It was a very good weekend of racing for the Blue Crews with Yale LWs, Yale HWs, Navy HWs and Yale Women sweeping all races in their respective regattas.

With the Yale HWs taking five races and the Olympic Axe from Dartmouth; Yale women's team sweeping Boston University and Dartmouth to claim the Class of 1985 Cup and the Yale lightweights sweeping Georgetown and MIT to claim the Joy Cup, it was a great day of racing and a great day to be a Yale rower.

4-6-2011 Blue Crews – Last Weekend and Next

Folks …

Lots of racing last weekend as the Spring season begins to gain momentum.  Mixed results for the Blue Crews — Yale LWs defeated Navy LWs and took the Eads Johnson Cupback to Derby.  Yale Women 1V were 4 seconds short and lost the Cayuga Cup to Cornell.  Navy Women finished 3rd behind Princeton and Rutgers.  Navy and Yale HWs were idle.  Teddy Ballgame took the trip South for the Eads Johnson Cup, leaving Downeast Maine in an April 1st Nor'easter blizzard, arriving at Lake Carnegie to sunny skies and 58 degrees, returning to Maine — 28 degrees and snow flurries.

3-31-2011 What the Scribes said – This Week in Blue Rowing – Red Sox Nation [early times]

Folks …

In Downeast Maine the weather forecast is calling for 6" of wet heavy snow.  Let's hope that it is an April Fool's Day Joke.  So what happened to Punxatawny Phil's forecast of an early Spring?  Regardless Teddy Ballgame says it is a go … so we will be driving to Princeton tomorrow to witness the annual LW Blue Crew Crash — the Eads Johnson Cup.
