We may be five days past the Vernal Equinox, but in Downeast Maine, evening temperatures are still below freezing, with days only a bit warmer [good for drawing sap for Maple Syrup], however the surest sign of Spring is that the Blue Crews are on the water and ready for racing …

It was a day of mixed results for the Blue Crews at the EARC Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond and the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River.
Yale women take Ivy League Championship beating the Princeton Tigers by a deck in the 1V. Return to Derby with most of the trophies including the overall championship. Bulldogs medal in all events — 1 gold – 1V, 3 silver – 3V4+, 3V8+, 3V4+B and 1 bronze – 2V
Yale 150s place 3rd in Jope Cup, with 3rd in 1V, and marked improvement over HYP performance. Princeton LWs win 1V, 2V and Jope Cup. Harvard 2nd with win in 1F. Bulldog crews win three medals — silver [2V] and 2 bronze [1V and 2F]
Navy LWs finish 5th in Jope Cup and 5th in Grand finals in 1V, 2V, 1F. Highlight for Navy is Plebe 2F taking gold medals in dominate performance. 3V take bronze.

As the 2010 Spring racing season moves into its championship racing phase, it is the end of speculating with polls, ranking and seeds, as well as who bested whom in the early season dual races and trophy competition. No more dead heats or bragging over whose trophy case is more filled with bigger cups. On Sunday, the crews will line up six across Lake Quinsigamond or the Cooper River and after 2,000 meters Sprints gold medals will be given, overall and individual trophies awarded and Ivy League Championships settled. So let’s get it on and settle it all on the water … no excuses.

Who has the edge, Harvard or Princeton? Or did one or both of the Blue Crews — Navy or Yale find more speed, better Flow, a quicker start, superior moves or a spectacular finish over the last two weeks of exams and practice?

Lots of racing this weekend with all Blue Crew in action.
Navy LWs -On Sunday, the #3 ranked Mids will host #5 Georgetown and #8 Delaware on the Severn River in Annapolis. The Navy LWs (2-1) are looking to maintain positive momentum this Sunday, as it swept Columbia in all-three races last Saturday and won the Eads Johnson Trophy over Yale two weeks ago. Last year against Georgetown and Delaware on the Potomac River, Navy defeated both squads in four of the five races, including a victory in the first varsity event.

In Blue Crew racing this weekend, the conditions were fast and the victories many.
In competition for the Eads Johnson Trophy, #4 ranked Navy LWs defeated #3 ranked Yale LWs on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday afternoon.
Navy’s first varsity boat completed the race in 5:39.8 to edge Yale by 1.5 seconds. The Midshipmen hoisted the Eads Johnson Trophy for the first time since 2007 and now own a 4-3 all-time record against Yale in the trophy race.
The Bulldogs won the Second Varsity Eight and the Third Varsity Eight races. The Midshipmen were nipped by 4.2 seconds in the second varsity race, 5:48.8-5:53.0, and 3.4 seconds in the third varsity competition, 5:52.7-5:56.1.

Racing this weekend will be highlighted by a Battle of the Blue Crews, as LWs from Navy and Yale meet for the 7th time to contest for the Eads Johnson Trophy on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ. The series is tied 3 – 3, with Yale defending, having won 2 of the past 3 1st Varsity races. This will be the opening race of the 2010 season for the Y150s. Last week, the N150s dropped a tough race to 2009 National Champion Princeton on the Severn.

All indications of Spring,at least on the east coast were a bit premature as racing on Saturday was held with temperatures in the 30s — no reports of snow.
Joseph Murtaugh Cup —
The Princeton first varsity, which includes four rowers who were part of the 2009 EARC, IRA and Henley championship boat, defeated Navy by 6.7 seconds on the Severn River and retained the Joseph Murtaugh Cup. The Tigers finished the course in 5:58.7, while Navy placed second in 6:05.4. The victory is the 14th consecutive in regular season regattas; Princeton’s last loss came at Navy to open the 2008 season.
In the 2V, Navy and Princeton battled the length of the course with the Tigers finishing 0.8 seconds [just a couple of feet] ahead at the finish in a time of 6:10.0. The Tigers led for much of the race, but the Midshipmen remained within striking distance throughout, as the lead was never more than three to four seats.

The winter “glacier” has finally disappeared. In southwestern PA the local media say we have gone from “snowmaggedon” to a threat of “floodzilla”. So with some signs of Spring — robins, cardinals and crocuses, despite the weather person calling for snow flurries tonight, it is time for rowers past and present to turn their thoughts to racing over 2,000 meters. With even more delight I am sure that the “Blue” squads trade in a winter of ergs and tank work for the swing of a shell and quality time on the Severn and Housatonic.

A good weekend of results for the Blue Crews on Lake Carnegie and the Schuykill River. Navy’s men’s crew teams produced four top-three times to showcase its performance at the 3 – mile Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie on Sunday. The Yale crew teams also turned in a strong all-around performance.
Men’s LW 8+ Steve Perry’s Navy LWs opened the day with a solid third-place time of 13:27.604 among 31 boats – just 7.919 seconds behind first-place Princeton.
