Getting to Overpeck Park

By car, instructions on the Navy Sports website.

Public Transportation:

  • For the southern entrance at Challenger Road: Take NJ Transit Route 167 [Harrington Park/Teaneck] from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in mid-town Manhattan to the bus stop at “Overpeck Corp/AGFA Building.” The bus dumps you off near the starting line. Walk about 2000 yards north to the finish line where there crews launch.
  • For the entrance along Fort Lee Road: Take NJ Transit Route 182 [Hackensack] from the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal. The route runs along Fort Lee Road near the park area’s entrance, ask driver to let you off at nearest stop.

    10/3/2009 Poughkeepsie Regatta

    Parents and Friends of Navy,

I apologize for my delay introducing myself. This summer I was appointed
the honor of coaching the Navy lightweight crew. I have had the pleasure of
teaching the men on the team more about rowing and themselves for the past
month. This weekend we begin our fall racing. I wanted to send an update
to let you know how things are proceeding.

Saturday we raced on the Hudson River in a re-row of the Poughkeepsie
Regatta forerunner of The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National
Championship Regatta} that was held here from 1895 to 1949

The race featured many of the crews that comprised the original regatta. The
race’s original stewards – Cornell University, Columbia University and the
University of Pennsylvania – competed and were joined by Navy and Marist.
Unfortunately, Columbia had to withdraw at the last minute.

The Poughkeepsie Regatta also provided an experience that unlike any other.

If you think you get tired watching the video, try getting out on the water at 6 am on a sunny Saturday.

Unlike previous videos, this one was shot using a directional microphone. Video will not load until you click on the play button which will open quicktime in a new page.

The NavyLights74-78 are already looking forward to the next full reunion in 2012 in the newly restored “former *N* room” of Hubbard Hall. 4/25/2009 Callow Cup Races

    0904cct

Video will not load until you click on the video image These are BIG files and can take some to load before the movie starts, depending on your download speed..

It would have been nice to have watched the races from a YP with the sun to our backs. Shooting into the sun & fog makes for a pretty blind image. It also would have helped to have the tripod head arm attached. Best part might be the sound track!

    Go Navy Lites!!

Coach Baker’s ’09 Season Opening Note

    Lightweight Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

As I write you this email, the Naval Academy Lightweight Rowing Team is less than 48 hours away from opening our spring season. I feel like I should pause for a moment for all of you former rowers and coxswains to think back to the ‘glory’ days of your youth and the many miles that you spent on the Severn River. Ok, enough about the past, let’s talk about the present!

Our lightweight team kicks off its 2009 season this weekend against Yale University in the sixth running of the Eads Johnson Jr. Cup. The race will take place on Saturday afternoon on Lake Carnegie in Princeton NJ. The races are slated to start at 1330, with the varsity race to conclude the afternoon at 1450. If you are in area, please come out to cheer on the guys as we race Yale.

    Renovation of Hubbard Hall

Last week, the Navy awarded a nearly $14 million contract for the renovation of Hubbard Hall. Federally appropriated funds will provide redesigned and expanded locker rooms for all three Navy Crew programs (heavies, lightweights, women), more efficiently engineered boat storage areas, training rooms, and a state-of-the-art rowing tank for off-water training. Preparations for the project will start immediately, with actual work on the building scheduled to commence in early summer. The project is expected to take 12-18 months, and when complete, Navy’s boathouse will rival those of the other elite rowing programs in the nation.
