Folks…
Folks…
Lots of racing this weekend inn the EARC {see schedule below from www.row2k.com}. Battle of the Blues — Yale and Navy with the Mids defending the Eads Johnson Trophy. Opening race for Andy Card’s LWs. With a quick turn around Navy will make the short trip from Lake Carnegie to the Schuykill River in Philadelphia to attempt to make it 8 races in a row over Penn in the Rusty Callow Cup. A win this year will even the Callow Cup series at 27-27 and also equal Penn’s earlier streak of 8 wins from 1973 to 1980.
Yale HWs row this weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. Competition in the Men’s Collegiate Varsity Invitational 8+ {Copley Cup} include the usual cast of fast EARC boats — Harvard, Syracuse, Princeton, Northeastern and Penn as well as the big guys from the west coast — California, Stanford and Washington. Schedule is included in the article below. N.B. — you can watch the SDCC events live online at www.crewclassic.org/video
From an earlier note from Tom Cook (USNA ’76) — “The San Diego Crew Classic is next weekend and many of the big schools are returning after an absence for several years. Money is involved and also the grand finals are on Sunday morning (vice the afternoon) when the winds are not normally a factor. I will be rowing in San Diego Rowing Club’s(SDRC) “Club Eight” category (age handicapped). Our heat is on Saturday the 5th at 4:30 with the final Sunday afternoon. I’ll keep you posted.” Tom’s SDRC crew will be in lane 5 {event #51}, the first of two heats looking to qualify for the City of San Diego Cup final.
Navy women compete against BU and George Washington on the Cooper River for the Playfair Cup. Yale women will be at home on the Housatonic River competing for the Cayuga Cup versus Cornell and Syracuse.
Given the stormy weather of late … here’s hoping for “fair winds and calm seas” on race day.
GO BLUE!
Cheers!
Best regards,
Coach and TB406

Navy Crew Seasons Continue with Three Races on the Road
ANNAPOLIS, MD. — The second week of the spring rowing season has the Navy lightweight and women’s teams challenging for a total of three trophies between the two programs this weekend.
The women’s team will start the weekend of competition Saturday morning when the Mids face Boston University and George Washington starting at 8 a.m. on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The winner of the varsity race between the three programs will be awarded the Playfair Cup. The Terriers have dominated the series, winning each of the first seven races for the Cup until the Mids broke through and won the race and the accompanying hardware last season for the first time.
Navy opened its 2008 season last week by placing third in the varsity division at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
“We are expecting Boston University to be pretty good again this year, and George Washington is rowing very well under their new head coach,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. “We are anxious to see what improvements we have been able to make since our opening day of racing last Saturday.”
It will be a busy weekend of racing for the lightweight team as they will first race Saturday evening against Yale on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., then will make the short drive to Philadelphia to compete against Penn Sunday morning.
The winner of Saturday’s varsity race will earn possession of the Eads Johnson Trophy, with the Callow Cup up for grabs during the Sunday’s varsity race against the Quakers.
Navy won the Eads Johnson Trophy last year and has won the trophy in three of the four years it has been challenged for, while the Mids have won the Callow Cup in each of the last seven years. Sunday’s race will break a 26-26 deadlock in the series between Navy and Penn.
The Mids enjoyed a successful opening to their season last weekend by sweeping all four races from Princeton, which included a victory in the inaugural varsity race for the Joseph Murtaugh Cup.
“I’m very excited about racing twice this weekend,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “Yale is always one of our toughest opponents and they seem to be very deep this year. I’m expecting some tight racing just like last weekend against Princeton. Racing Penn on Sunday after only 14 hours of rest will be a great test of our endurance. This is our only opportunity to race twice in the same weekend before Eastern Sprints, so it should be a great learning experience for us.”

Varsity Boat to be Tested in San Diego
1V Faces Strongest Competition Yet
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Bulldogs’ varsity eight is in San Diego, Calif., to race in the 35th San Diego Crew Classic on Apr. 5 and 6. Since Yale does not usually participate in this regatta, the result will serve as an early indicator of the team’s standing against crews it does not race until Eastern Sprints or IRAs. Yale faces fast competition from other strong crews vying for a National Championship in June like Washington, Cal, Stanford and Harvard.
