Lightweight Rowing Team Sweeps Columbia
Navy wins varsity race by five seconds

Navy Crew

April 12, 2008

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Navy lightweight rowing team swept a trio of races from Columbia Saturday on the Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham, N.Y.

The two varsity boats were even through the opening 500 meters of their race, but Navy slowly was able to build some space between itself and the Columbia crew to allow the Mids to go on to win the contest by about five seconds.

Navy’s second and third varsity boats both defeated Columbia’s second varsity boat in the race featuring the three entries. Navy’s second varsity boat finished 10 seconds in front of Columbia, with the third varsity crew rallying from a six-seat deficit at 1,000 meters to edge the Lions at the finish line.

The opening race of the evening saw Navy’s first freshman boat defeat Columbia by nearly three seconds, with Navy’s second freshman boat finishing in third place in the contest.

“We had some tough races last week against Yale, but all of our crews performed very well tonight,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “In particular, our third varsity boat rowed a very gutsy race to overcome the large deficit that they did.”

After taking next week off from competition next weekend, Navy will return to action April 26 when the Mids play host to Harvard and Georgetown.

Distance: 2000 meters
Conditions: Varsity 8: bit of head current 2nd Varsity 8 and Freshman 8: slight tail current All races: moderate head wind, decreasing toward the finish line
Comments: This was originally scheduled as the Wit Cup Regatta between Columbia and Rutgers, with Navy rowing as a guest. When the Rutgers lightweight program was suspended following last spring’s budget cuts, the Wit Cup was put in abeyance. Thus, today’s rowing was a non-cup regatta between Columbia and Navy. The Varsity 8 race was delayed 30 minutes after the Columbia boat suffered an equipment breakage during pre-race warm-ups. The race was delayed while Columbia’s varsity transferred to the Columbia Freshman boat.

Joy Cup back to Yale
(April 12) A calm but rainy Charles River saw the Yale lightweights win all four races and reclaim the Joy Cup against Georgetown and host M.I.T. early Saturday. The 2F and 1F won their races in a soaking rain, and though the weather cleared up a bit for the 2V and 1V races, the result was the same as the Bulldogs enjoyed a successful trip to Boston, their first of two races on the Charles in 2008..

Yale Sweeps Dartmouth
Bulldogs Retain Olympic Axe

Three sophomores row in the Yale 1V: Lucas Spielfogel, Henry Cole and James Tormey.

April 12, 2008

DERBY, CT. – In it’s second dual of the spring, the Yale men’s heavyweight crew team cruised to easy wins over Dartmouth. The Yale varsity eight won by over fifteen seconds to ensure that the Olympic Axe stay at Gilder Boathouse for another year.

The first event of the morning was the second varsity race. In it, both the Bulldogs’ 2V and 3V faced Dartmouth’s second varsity. Yale’s 2V of Nolan Maher (stroke), Vincent Granata (seven), Dominique Fenton (six), Matthew Barber (five), Sean Riordan (four), Keir Evans (three), David Mcintosh (two), Antonio Sirianni (bow) and Rebecca Burgoyne-Allen (cox) won the event after a quick start. The 2V pulled ahead early on and never looked back. In second, and 8.1 seconds later, came Yale’s 3V of Charlie Pfeifer (stroke), Kristoffer Strauss (seven), Richard Littlehale (six), Charles Moore (five), William Walter (four), Gregory Muir (three), David Hamstra (two), Colin Campbell (bow) and Emily Flaxman (cox). The Dartmouth 2V came in third, 20.5 seconds after the Yale 2V and 12.4 seconds after the 3V.

Just like this year, both Yale boats came in ahead of Dartmouth in the 2007 edition of this race. The 2V’s margin over Dartmouth in 2007 was 17.7 seconds compared to this year’s 20.5. The margin between this year’s 2V and 3V compared to last year’s has also increased. The 2V only came 2.9 seconds ahead of the 3V last year compared to the 8.1 second margin this year.

The second event of the day was the 2F4+ race. It was an easy win for Yale, with the 2F four of George Moran (stroke), Benjamin Ortiz (three), Simon Warren (two), Patrick Vergara (bow) and Francesca Yi (cox) coming in 40.8 seconds ahead of the Dartmouth crew. A few minutes into the race, Yale had five boat-lengths of open water over Dartmouth. The Dartmouth crew then caught a boat-stopping crab, effectively ending their hopes of catching up to the Yale 2F.

The Yale 1F followed the 2F with another, albeit less, decisive victory. The 1F of Spyridon Mastroyannis (stroke), Marcos Carzolio (seven), Duncan Logie (six), Ezra Mitchell (five), Matthew Ramlow (four), Daniel Klassen (three), Nathaniel Reeve (two), Benjamin Grant (bow) and Carolyn Tobkin (cox) came in 11.7 seconds ahead of the Dartmouth 1F. The Yale 1F thus remains undefeated.

The final event of the morning was the varsity eight. The Yale 1V finished off the clean sweep by beating the Dartmouth varsity boat by 15.1 seconds. The first varsity boat included Erik Woelber (stroke), Sean Hurley (seven), Andrew Collard (six), Pieter Morgan (five), James Tormey (four), Henry Cole (three), Lucas Spielfogel (two), Jack Vogelsang (bow) and Michael Ciccotti (cox). In last year’s race, the 2007 1V beat Dartmouth by 19.2 seconds.

The Bulldogs will host Columbia and Penn on Apr. 19 in defense of the Blackwell Cup. This will be the penultimate race before Eastern Sprints on May 15.

Boston University and Dartmouth are both quality programs with good athletes.”

Women’s Rowing Team Splits Varsity Races

Navy wins two-of-three races at the George Washington Invite

Navy Crew

April 12, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The final day of the George Washington Invitational saw the varsity boat from the Navy women’s rowing team lose a close race to Iowa and defeat George Mason by 12 seconds, Saturday on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.

The Mids had defeated Iowa by two seconds in the varsity race during the 2007 G.W. Invite, but this year the Hawkeyes posted a time of 6:19.1 to edge the Mids by 2.6 seconds. Later in the day, Navy recorded a time of 6:30.0 to defeat George Mason by exactly 12 seconds.

“We weren’t happy about losing to Iowa, but we learned a lot of lessons in the race, namely that we needed to have a strong sprint at the end of the race,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. “We were then able to put that lesson to good use and had our best sprint of the season in our second race against George Mason.”

Navy’s varsity boat opened the regatta Friday with a 12-second victory over MIT.

Navy’s second varsity crew won both of its races Saturday.

Navy will next play host to Georgetown April 19 on the Severn River in Annapolis.
