From the Intercollegiate Rowing Association:

The 1922 Trophy was introduced in 1990 and is a silver bowl that commemorates 1922 as the year that men’s intercollegiate lightweight rowing formally began in the U.S. with the advent of the Harvard-Princeton-Yale (HYP) lightweight race. The trophy is presented to the winner of the IRA men’s varsity lightweight eight (MVL8+).

This lightweight event was added to the IRA in 1987 but Navy lightweight crew did not begin competing in the event until 1995. Navy won The 1922 Trophy in 2004 and 2021 and was second in the event in 2002 and 2008.

Due to a COVID-19 pandemic the IRA regatta was not rowed in 2020.
