From the Intercollegiate Rowing Association:

The 1922 Trophy was introduced in 1990 and is a silver bowl that commemorates 1922 as the year that men’s intercollegiate lightweight rowing formally began in the U.S. The trophy is presented to the winner of the IRA men’s varsity lightweight eight (MVL8+).

This lightweight event was added to the IRA in 1988 but Navy lightweight crew did not begin competing in the event until 1994. Navy won The 1922 Trophy in 2004 and was second in the event in 2002 and 2008.
