Navy Varsity LWs def. DE; Yale LWs sweep Dodge Cup & Take 4 of 5 from Cornell

Folks…

Lots of exciting racing, some extremely close wins, and a basket of victories of the folks in Blue.

* Navy LWs take four of five races over Delaware on nice conditions on the Severn. Nick Baker’s 1F Plebes lose a tough race by a few seats (1.6 seconds) to a strong Delaware Frosh boat. Last week, the DE LW 1F won easily over Dartmouth on Lake Quinsigamond by 14.6 seconds. Next week the Mids will host Harvard and Georgetown in Haines Cup competition.

Last week, the DE LW 1F won easily over Dartmouth on Lake Quinsigamond by 14.6 seconds. Next week the Mids will host Harvard and Georgetown in Haines Cup competition.
* For Yale LWs — double the racing, twice the fun and victories in 7 of 8 races. The Elis swept morning racing over Columbia and Penn and retain the Dodge Cup with the Bulldog 1V leading Columbia by 2 lengths (7 seconds) and Penn by nearly three (9.9 seconds). In afternoon racing, crews handled rough conditions in the first 1,000 meters with the Yale 1V leading Cornell by open water over the finish line (6.2 seconds). {Coach’s comments on conditions from www.row2k.com — Conditions: Very strong 8-11 mph headwind, gusting to 13-14 mph. Lots of rollers and cresting waves in the first 1250, lessening a bit in the last 750. Having only one over-the-head crab (Yale 2F) is a credit to the oarsmen.} Cornell earlier in the day lost by a length to Princeton (4.4 seconds) on Lake Carnegie in much better conditions, with the Tigers winning the Platt Cup. Next for Yale, the Connecticut River and Hanover next weekend to meet Dartmouth in Durand Cup racing.
* By all accounts Steve Perry’s Dartmouth LW 1V had the closest race of the day winning the Biglin Bowl on the Charles River by 5/100 of a second over Harvard! Bravo Zulu to the Big Green crew. Looking for close racing for undefeated Blue and Green LW 1Vs in the Durand Cup next week.
* Yale HWs take 3 of 4 from Columbia and Penn, but lose Blackwell Cup to Columbia. The Light Blue Lions took just a few seats in the last 250 meters to beat the Eli by 1.2 seconds and win the Blackwell Cup for the first time in 67 years. Mark Davis’s Bulldog Freesh remain undefeated. Next week Yale will meet Princeton and Cornell on Lake Carnegie in Carnegie Cup competition. Harvard swept Princeton on the Charles, today, with Harry Parker’s 1V taking the Compton Cup by 1/2 second, a deck, over the Tigers.
* On the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, Navy HWs finished second to Syracuse in the 1V by three seats (1.4 seconds), Cornell was third. Syracuse wins the Goes Trophy for the third year in a row. The Orangemen also won the overall Stag Trophy with Navy and Cornell tied. Rick Clothier’s HW 1V will meet Columbia Sunday to settle custody of the Maxwell Stevenson Trophy at Mercer Lake, NJ
* Yale W varsity boats remain undefeated with wins over Tennessee and Princeton on Lake Carnegie. With the win over Princeton, Will Porter’s 1V retained the Carola B. Eisenburg Cup. The 2nd -ranked Bulldogs are back on the Housatonic River next Saturday, hosting 3rd-ranked Virginia and 13th-ranked Harvard competing for The Case Cup.
* On the Severn, Navy W swept Georgetown convincingly. The Mid’s next race will be April 27 when the Navy W compete in the Patriot League Championship in Pennsauken, N.J.

Bob Blase reported in this morning on the Severn River racing and sent this picture of the undefeated Navy LW 2V in the JEVA in the finishing 500 meters. The Navy LW 3V finished 10 seconds back and according to our intrepid reporter, “Delaware is out of the frame”.

If you look closely, there is something slightly out of the ordinary here. For further data, there are some great photos on www.row2k.com of the Johnson Cup racing from 5 April. Take particular note of photos 39 to 45.

[Hint: It is not the fine racing conditions on the Severn. Keith Weaver argued for this for three years and still does …]

Cheers!

Lightweight Rowing Team Wins Varsity Race Over Delaware

Mids win all but first freshman race

Navy Crew

April 19, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, MD. — The Navy lightweight rowing team won the varsity race and three of the four additional races the Mids contested against Delaware, Saturday morning on the Severn River in Annapolis, MD.

Navy’s varsity boat posted a time of 6:07.6 to finish 17 seconds ahead of the Delaware entry (6:24.5). Navy boats also placed both first and second in the second varsity race, first and third in the second freshman race and won the two-boat varsity four contest.

Delaware’s lone win over the five races was in the first freshman flight where the Blue Hens edged Navy by 1.6 seconds.

“I feel our varsity, second varsity and third varsity boats all had solid races today,” said Navy head coach Rob Friedrich. “We knew coming into the race that Delaware had a very strong freshman boat and they displayed their strength today. They may be the fastest freshman boat we have seen all year. It was a tight race the entire length of the course.”

The Mids will close their regular season April 26 when Navy plays host to Harvard and Georgetown. The varsity race between the Mids and the Crimson is for the Haines Cup.

“We are excited about the opportunity ahead of us next weekend when we face Harvard and Georgetown,” said Friedrich. “We want to end our regular season on a high note, which means we will need to have a good week of practice.”

Elis Hold Onto Dodge Cup in Morning

Beat Cornell in Afternoon —
Choppy Conditions Prove Challenging

April 19, 2008

NEW HAVEN, CT. – Yale took home the Dodge Cup Saturday, claiming all three races over boats from Columbia and Penn. The host Bulldogs also took four of five races from the Cornell crew. The Yale 1V won comfortably in the morning session, besting Columbia’s 1V by 7.30 seconds and Penn’s first boat by 9.93 seconds. In the afternoon, the Eli varsity finished 6.2 seconds ahead of Cornell’s top boat. The Bulldog second varsity and freshman boats also won twice. The victory in the Dodge Cup is another in a long line of successes for the Bulldogs against Penn and Columbia: Yale has only lost the Dodge Cup twice since 1978.

The Yale varsity eight recorded a time of 5:47.42, good enough for a 7.30 second margin of victory over runner-up Columbia (5:55.02). Penn’s 1V crossed in 5:57.35, 9.93 seconds off the pace.

In the Second Varsity 8, the Eli 2V notched a time of 6:02.32, which edged the Yale 3V (6:03.61) by 1.29 seconds. The Columbia 2V crossed in a time of 6:11.64, 9.32 seconds behind the Bulldog 2V.

In the First Freshman 8, the Yale 1F won in a time of 5:52.71, bettering the Columbia 1F by 6.69 seconds. The Penn 1F (6:01.90) and the Yale 2F (6:29.90) finished third and fourth respectively.

Late Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs finished their busy day of rowing by taking on Cornell. The Elis claimed four of five races. In the First Varsity race, the Yale 1V won by a 6.2 second margin. The Bulldog 2V and 1F were also winners, by margins of 1.2 and 18.7 seconds respectively. The Yale 3V beat Cornell’s 3V by 5.6 seconds, while the Eli 2F fell to the Big Red’s second freshman boat by 18.9 seconds.

Difficult conditions made the Housatonic nearly un-rowable in the afternoon.

“The wind was 8-11 MPH, gusting to 13-14 MPH,” Yale Head Coach Andy Card said. “The headwind picked up a lot of chop and made the conditions almost un-rowable in the first 1000 meters. Both crews did a tremendous job in handling the water. We were lucky to get ahead when the water flattened out.”

Yale will look to continue its winning ways when it travels to Hanover, NH for the Durand Cup against Dartmouth on Apr. 26.

“Dartmouth beat us last year and is coming off of a win over Harvard today,” Card said. “We’re looking forward to a great race.”

Yale Wins Three of Four in Blackwell Cup
Lions Take Varsity Eight

April 19, 2008

DERBY, CT. – The Bulldogs won three out of four races at the Gilder Boathouse against opponents Columbia and Penn, but fell in the varsity eight to hand over the Blackwell Cup to the Lions for the first time in sixty-seven years. The race was also the Bulldogs’ last home race of the season on the Housatonic River.

The day’s racing started with a 10.8 second victory over Penn by Yale’s first 2F four. The second 2F four came in 3.8 seconds after the Penn four. In the 2007 edition of this race, both Yale fours came in ahead of Penn.

The Bulldogs took the next event with a similar margin. The undefeated freshman eight came in 10.1 seconds ahead of second-place Columbia and 21.1 seconds ahead of third-place Penn. In last year’s freshman race, the Bulldogs finished second to Columbia and ahead of Penn.

Following these two victories, the Yale 2V held off moves by Columbia to take the second varsity race by 8.7 seconds. In third place, and 16.2 seconds after Yale, came the Penn 2V. In 2007, the 2V lost to Penn by 2.2 seconds and beat Columbia by 9.6 seconds.

It seemed like it would be a clean sweep until the Columbia 1V crept back on Yale in the last 250 meters to win the varsity race and Blackwell Cup by 1.2 seconds. In 2007, the Bulldogs won the event by 9.1 seconds over Penn and 11.6 seconds over Columbia.

Yale crews will head to New Jersey to face Princeton and Cornell in defense of the Carnegie Cup on Apr. 26. This will be the Bulldogs’ last race before Eastern Sprints on May 18.

Syracuse Wins Third-Straight Goes Trophy Race

Mids finish in second place by 1.4 seconds

Navy Crew

April 19, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, MD. — Syracuse won the varsity race by 1.4 seconds over Navy and 7.2 seconds over Cornell to win the Goes Trophy Race between the three heavyweight rowing teams for a third-straight year, Saturday on Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca, N.Y. It marks the first time since the Goes Trophy Race was established in 1955 that the Orange have won the race in three consecutive seasons.

Syracuse tallied a time of 5:40.9 to win the varsity race, with Navy finishing in second place with a time of 5:42.3 and Cornell placing third with a clocking of 5:58.1.

“It was a hot race,” said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. “The lead went back and forth between Navy and Syracuse over the entire course. The difference in the race was in the last 30 strokes when Syracuse put together a stronger sprint. We are disappointed with that result, but we can be very pleased with beating a talented Cornell crew by nearly six seconds.”

Navy would place third behind Cornell and Syracuse in both the second varsity and second freshman races, as well as second behind the Orange in the first freshman race. With the results, Syracuse also claimed possession of the Stag Trophy, which is presented to the team compiling the most team points on the day. The Mids and the Big Red tied for second place in the Stag Trophy standings.

Navy’s varsity boat will take to the water again Sunday morning when the Mids face Columbia in Princeton, N.J., for the Maxwell Stevenson Trophy. The remainder of the Navy and Columbia crews will compete against each other in early May.

“This will be a challenge for us,” said Clothier of having to race again Sunday after a close loss. “Columbia has a very good crew that beat Yale today, so we will have to quickly put today behind us.”

Women’s Rowing Team Sweeps Georgetown

Last racing for Mids before Patriot League Championship

Navy Crew

April 19, 2008

ANNAPOLIS, MD. — Navy boats placed first and second in all three races as the women’s rowing team swept Georgetown, Saturday morning on the Severn River in Annapolis.

A great start by Navy’s first varsity boat allowed the Mids to open a one-length advantage very early in the race. The crew would eventually cross the finish line in a winning time of 6:51, with Navy’s second varsity boat following in second place nine seconds later. The Georgetown entry would complete the race in a time of 7:04.

“We have worked all year on putting together a good start and we had our best one of the season today,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes.

Navy’s next race will be April 27 when the Mids compete in the Patriot League Championship in Pennsauken, N.J. After winning the inaugural league title in 2005, Navy has placed second to Bucknell in each of the last two years in both the first varsity race and in the overall points tabulation between the teams.

“You always want to be racing at your best when it is time for a championship regatta,” said Hughes. “We have been improving all season long and I feel we can make necessary further improvements in order for us to be at our best next week.”
