4/10/2010 – All Blue Crews on the Water This Weekend

Folks….

All the Blue Crews will be racing this weekend.

Navy LWs [ranked #4 in the most recent – 31 March USRowing poll] will travel to Orchard Beach, Pelham, Long Island to race the #7 Columbia Lions LWs.

The men’s lightweight crew team (1-1) will look to continue its success from a weekend ago, as it defeated Yale in the first varsity race to bring home the Eads Johnson Trophy. The Mids also defeated the Bulldogs in the first and second freshmen races. At last year’s three-team race against Columbia and Princeton, the Midshipmen finished ahead of the Lions in every race, including a 21.6-second victory in the first varsity event.

“We’ve had a consistent week of training and have made some adjustments to prepare for this weekend,” stated Navy men’s lightweight crew head coach Steve Perry. “The team is excited for another weekend of tough racing.”

Last week on Lake Carnegie, the Columbia 1V [5:51.7], stayed close, but finished 3rd to #1 Princeton [5:46.9] and #5 Georgetown [5:50.7]. Princeton also won both the 2V and 1F with Columbia placing 2nd in the 2V and 3rd in the 1F.

Yale LWs [ranked #3] will face #12 MIT and #5 Georgetown on the Charles River in Cambridge, MA in the 36th contest for the James C. Joy Cup. Since 1974, the Varsity Lightweight crews of Yale and MIT have rowed annually except in 2006, when there was no race and in fact no MIT LW squad. Yale has won this Cup, donated in honor of Yale coach Jimmy Joy, by his Yale oarsmen, 32 times and each year since 1979. MIT has held the Cup 3 times.

The Yale 150s had good conditions in Princeton, N.J., last Saturday, but lost the Eads Johnson Trophy to the Mids for the first time in 3 years.

“Navy gave us some really tough racing in every event,” assistant coach Colin Farrell said. “We’re looking to take that experience and use it to be a smarter and faster crew the next time we race.”

Yale won the second and third varsity races by more than three seconds each, while the Midshipmen outpaced both Bulldog Freesh boats and the 1st varsity.

“For the freshmen, a big highlight is getting to wear the Yale blue and white for the first time,” Farrell said. “Also, the experience gained from racing each week is huge for us.”

Farrell said the team is looking forward to the coming races and expecting improvement.

“The [difference] between the winners and the losers is less deeply felt than you might imagine,” lightweight head coach Andy Card said. “We are never satisfied after the first race, no matter the result. Externally, of course, we lost the varsity race for the first time in two [sic] years, and who likes to do that?”

“At the end of the year, we want to confirm that we have met and even exceeded our own internal standards and graded out well,” Card added. “We can’t control how fast the other crews are, so we are focused on making ourselves as fast as we can be.”

Last week Georgetown finished 2nd to Princeton and ahead of Columbia in 2 of three races on Lake Carnegie [1V and 1F]. The Hoyas were 3rd in the 2V competition. On the Charles River last weekend, MIT [6:30.4] finished 3rd in the 1st Varsity, trailing Dartmouth [6:22.4] and Nick Baker’s Penn Quakers [6:24.5]. MIT won the 1st Freshmen race, but did not boat a crew for the 2V.

Yale HWs [ranked #6] will face #16 Dartmouth on the Housatonic River in Derby, CT in defense of the Olympic Axe. Dartmouth and Yale have met in competition for this trophy since 2004 with the Bulldogs winning each year [6].

Last Saturday, the men’s heavyweight team sliced through the waters of the Housatonic in their first 2,000-meter races of the season. Results were mixed for the Bulldogs, but most boats came close to success in their first races and the HW varsity was within two seconds of a win.

“We’ll keep working hard and hopefully get faster in the coming weeks,” heavyweight head coach John Pescatore said.

The heavyweights bested #3 Brown in three of five races on the nearby Housatonic River. It was a warm day on the Housatonic when the heavyweights took to their oars. The freshman eight, third varsity eight and varsity four triumphed over Brown’s boats, but the top two varsity boats failed to win their competitive matches. Still, most races were close: The varsity eight lost by less than two seconds.

“Brown usually is near the top of the Eastern teams, so for the freshman boat to win was a good start to the season and we’ll have momentum going into our race this weekend,” said Viktor Romanov ’13, a rower on the freshman eight.

Last weekend the Dartmouth Big Green swept un-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA in their season opener.

Navy HWs [ranked 14th] will open their 2010 racing season at the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River at Foggy Bottom in Washington, DC.

The men’s heavyweight crew team’s first varsity boat will open up on Friday afternoon against Coach Tony Johnson’s un-ranked Georgetown before taking on un-ranked MIT on Saturday morning and #20 UC-San Diego on Saturday afternoon.

Last season, the Midshipmen won their races against Georgetown and George Washington to win not only the George Washington Invitational men’s trophy, but also the overall regatta trophy.

“We are excited to begin racing,” stated Navy men’s heavyweight crew head coach Rick Clothier. “The George Washington Invitational gives us a chance to race three duals races against crews which were all 2009 IRA attendees. We should know a lot more about our crews by late Saturday afternoon.”

Navy 2V will face Georgetown and George Washington on Friday and Holy Cross and Gonzaga on Saturday morning. In the afternoon session on Saturday, the Navy 2V will compete against Navy B [Navy’s HW 3V] and UC-San Diego. Navy B will also row on Friday against the 2nd Varsities from UC-San Diego and Holy Cross.

Rob Friedrich’s 1st Plebes will take on Georgetown and George Washington on Friday and Holy Cross and Gonzaga on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, the Plebes will face off against UC-San Diego and the Mids 2nd Frosh. The same Navy 2F will row against the George Washington 2nd Freshmen on Friday and again on Saturday morning.

Blue Crew Coaching Alumni at the George Washington Invitational:

Mark Davis, a protege of Jimmy Joy, and most recently the Frosh Coach at Yale is the new Head coach at GW.

Eric Carcich is in his first year as head coach for the women’s rowing at GW. Carcich coached at Yale from 1999-06 as an assistant lightweight men’s rowing coach with a very successful record with the Yale 150 Freesh.

Tony Johnson is in his 18th year directing the rowing program at Georgetown. He coaches the varsity heavyweight men. He first coached the Georgetown crew from 1967 to 1969 before guiding the Yale program for 20 years.

Yale Women – After opening the spring season with two straight road trips, the Yale women’s crew finally gets to race on the friendly waters of the Housatonic River on Saturday. The Bulldogs, ranked fourth in this week’s CRCA-US Rowing poll, host No. 20 Dartmouth and un-ranked Boston University. The Class of 1985 Cup will be at stake in the varsity eight race.

Yale overcame injuries and illness to have a successful weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. The Bulldogs won four of five races, including the varsity, second varsity and varsity four, against Cornell and Syracuse on Friday, and then disposed of seventh-ranked Michigan State and Buffalo on Saturday. Despite the wins, Yale fell three spots in the national poll.

Dartmouth’s varsity eight is undefeated. The Big Green has victories over Tennessee, Louisville, Northeastern, Rhode Island and Boston College. Boston University competed at the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend. In racing over two days, the BU Terrier 1st Varsity won each of their races defeating Central Florida, Miami and Indiana.

Yale has won the Class of 1985 Cup in each of the last 10 years. Last year on the Charles River, the Bulldogs cruised to nearly five-second victory over Dartmouth. BU was third.

At the George Washington Invitational, the Navy women’s crew team (7-3) will take on St. Joseph’s on Friday afternoon, followed by Saturday morning’s races against Central Florida and Saturday afternoon’s events against George Washington. At last year’s invitational, the Midshipmen went 2-2 with victories over MIT and Colgate. Last weekend, the Mids had their top boat in each event finish first during the morning heats to advance to the finals, where they produced several strong showings and defeated defending Patriot League champion Bucknell in the varsity four race.

Below, for more detail and flavor, please see articles from the Yale Daily News, Navy Sports and Yale Sports, as well as the most recent rankings from Row2k.com.

Yale HW 1st Varsity is ranked #6 up from 12th in the prior week. Navy remained at #14. There was no new LW coaches poll this week so Yale remains at #3 and Navy at #4, obviously not reflecting the Mids win of the Eads Johnson Trophy.

Unlike the men’s HW and LW USRowing polls, the CRCA-US Rowing poll for women’s rowing ranks the entire squad rather than just the 1st varsity. Despite victories over Cornell, Syracuse, Michigan State and Buffalo last weekend, the Yale Women dropped from 1st to 4th this week. The Navy Women’s squad in un-ranked but received one vote this week.

M. CREW | Bulldogs back on the water

The heavyweight crew team’s third varsity eight beat Brown by 2.7 seconds on the Housatonic River on Saturday. The Elis took three of five events against the Bears.
On Saturday, the men’s heavyweight and lightweight crew teams sliced through the waters of the Housatonic and Lake Carnegie in their first 2,000-meter races of the season. Results were mixed for the Bulldogs, but most boats came close to success in their first races and both varsity boats were within two seconds of a win.

“We’ll keep working hard and hopefully get faster in the coming weeks,” heavyweight head coach John Pescatore said.

The heavyweights bested Brown in three of five races on the nearby Housatonic River while the lightweights won two of their five at Lake Carnegie in New Jersey.

It was a warm day on the Housatonic when the heavyweights took to their oars. “Navy gave us some really tough racing in every event,” assistant coach Colin Farrell said. “We’re looking to take that experience and use it to be a smarter and faster crew the next time we race.”

Yale won the second and third varsity races by more than three seconds each, while the Midshipmen outpaced the Bulldogs’ freshmen and varsity boats.

The lightweights will have a chance to prove themselves this weekend when they race Georgetown and MIT for the Joy Cup in Cambridge, Mass., early Saturday morning. The heavyweights will race Dartmouth in New Haven on Saturday.

With the season opener behind them, rowers and coaches from both teams said they are looking forward to getting faster, stronger and better.

“At the end of the year, we want to confirm that we have met and even exceeded our own internal standards and graded out well,” Card added. “We can’t control how fast the other crews are, so we are focused on making ourselves as fast as we can be.”
